80-200mm f2.8

I've been looking at these on ebay and find there are a few incarnations of this lens, the earlier models have a slide body to perform focusing and zoom, the newer editions have two rings to do the tasks. From what I read the earlier lens may have better optics but no IS, is IS really required when you have an f2.8 to play with. Would I be just as well of with the earlier model.

The 80-200 F2.b is a great lens; I hired one from Lensesforhire.co.uk to see if I really needed the cost of the 70-200 with virbation reduction.

Net result is $1100 USD later and a great lens... Get a new one from the USA it's only £100 more than used from ebay...

You will not look back. Only wish it was an 80-400 f2.8!!!!

none of the 80-200 's have VR/IS

That would be the 70-200, which will set you back around £1500 these days for a new one, and you wont get a second hand one I reckon for less then £1000

Edit: Just saw your other post. So you already know that

Unless you have the money to throw around the 80-200 is a very competent lens, though the AF isnt as fast as the 70-200. What camera are you using it with?

In the end it depends what you can argue spending on it.

Had a 80-200 push pull lens and loved it.. until it was stolen, now have the 70-200vr and optically see no difference... if anything I think the 80-200 may even have had the edge... pick one up at the right price and your not going to be disappointed, its a pro lens that produces pro results.

I have a the 70-200mm vr 2.8 and love it but I used a freinds 80-200mm 2.8 af-s if ed to give it its full title and i really really liked it no vr but i hardly use my vr on my vr lens and I will be buying one as a spare lens if the 70-200m breaks or in for cleaning I think they are great lenses but no its a matter of which on to get the 80-200mm 2.8 af-s if ed one or the 70-200mm 2.8 vr as they are now both nearly the same price as the new 70-200mm 2.8 vrII is out so the big Question is now what will people buy the old ver or the 80-200mm?
