My computer or what?

Hi again.

Having installed my new computer for about a week or so now I began to experience erratic Internet site download speeds. I contacted my ISP and had a moan and they adjusted my telephone line to receive at least as near to what I am paying for as is possible here on the Isle of Wight. I am currently receiving an average over twenty four hours of 9mb.

Even so, I am experiencing some erratic page download times with various sites, including this one at times, with pages taking up to 30 seconds to download. The biggest offender is Flickr, where pages can take as long as 45 seconds to download. Other websites can be as fast as a blink of an eye. Can this be my new computer and Windows 7 pro, or is everyone experiencing this. My previous computer was six years old and ran XP Pro with little or no broadband problems of this nature. I am at a loss because the download speeds I'm getting now doesn't suggest it is the Internet that is the problem.

Any help with this would be appreciated as usual.

What browser are you using? If Internet Explorer turn of the Phishing site checker, see if that makes a difference.

What antivirus software are you using? Is it the same as before or a different one? Try turning on access web scanning off to see if that makes a difference.

You might also want to consider using Firefox Keith. I've been using it for a couple of months now, both on XP and now W7 with no problems at all. It also appears to be a lot faster than IE. I take it that you're using v9.0.0.736 of KAS as this is the only version authorised for use with W7.

I used to run Fox a couple of years ago, but had a few issues with it back then. I'm sure it has probably changed now, so I might revisit it.

Another recommendation for FF. Since it has gained market share more web designers are following standards and not coding for IE so there are less problems. There is currently only one site I cannot use and it is a Canadian Government site (figures - the government). I use FF on my Mac and Linux desktops, I never use Windows.

Good advice in relation to Firefox, I use both for various reasons and find Firefox to be a little faster than IE8 but there's not really much in it. If you've just upgraded to Windows 7 the problem may lie with your network adapter settings. Check that you have the latest drivers for you card. The manufacturers website would be the best place to look, sometime the basic window drivers aren't up to the job.

Been using Firefox for the past few days now and the problems seem to have gone, thank goodness.

My jorney over to Windows 7 pro was via a complete new computer build, everything new and up to date. IE8 was fine on my old machine running XP Pro, but I think it has a few issues with W7 that need sorting out by MS.
