Upgrade from a 400D....

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I too am in a quandry about upgrading but at the bottom end and could do with an opinion.

I also have a 400d but I am not interested in video ( surely stills must comprimise video and visa versa).

I have been looking at the 40d 50d & 7d but here we go:

7d price video
50d noise noise noise (or so I hear opinions please)
40d cheaper option and spend the rest on glass

Interested to hear opinions

Video doesn't compromise stills quality in the same way that live view doesn't.

It's difficult to advise what camera to buy without knowing more about your budget and other equipment (what lenses you've got etc). If it was me and I had the money I'd buy the 7D, no questions. It's re-written the rulebook on resolution and noise. Best SLR Canon have made for a long time (in my opinion).

Is not generally accepted that glass is everything. Would it be better to save on the body and and spend the savings on a L series lens

Glass might be a lot but it's certainly not everything. Glass has little or no relevance when it comes to resolution, acuity, noise or diffraction for example.

I don't know what would be best for you as you haven't said what lenses you already have and what sort of things you shoot or what your budget is.

I have had the 7D for 2 weeks now, the only bug bear I have is the Canon manual, the AF point system is different due to the support of AF zones etc, the manual is dreadful at explaining that however an article done by Canon funny enough sorted that out.

So no bug bears with the Camera at all so far, upgrading from the 40D I have found it quick and easy to adapt to and feel genuinley wowed by how polished it is a camera. Having said that I loved my 40D but the 7D was a worthy successor (unlike the 50D which added nothing significant to the 40D IMHO).

I've heard there is auto focus problems with the 7d. If you google it there is loads on the internet about it. I have the money to upgrade to the 7d but have now been put off by this. I even went into London camera exchange before i knew of this problem to buy it but they had sold out. I have since had a text from a friend telling me he has the problem.

50 d noise not an issue unless you go to stupid iso settings .I love mine .

Not had any issues myself with autofocus and still loving my 7D.

I currently use my 400D for textile and food work and not only need to upgrade as new markets demand more, but also want to relegate my old 400D to 'backup'. I have a budget of around £1500 but haven't a clue what to do go for. Advice please!
