You'd have to ask Ed, it depends on what the lighting was like.

Raw images can have the white balance changed during post processing in software such as DPP, Lightroom and Aperture. It allows you to not have to worry too much about changing the WB as the light changes and also gives you more control to get it set precisely to match the lighting (although some mixed lighting scenarios can sometimes make that less possible).

one more thing, if you set camera to Ap at say F4 how do you get a reasonable shutter speed? do you have to increase your iso until its the right shutter speed?

If you've set the aperture then the only other in-camera setting that can be changed to increase shutter speed is the ISO. Alternatively, if you can, you can increase the amount of available light.

Or you can 'push' the exposure in your raw editor.

Depends. Photography is full of 'depends' and compromises. Depending on how far away you are from the runway you may have to use the 100-400. Alternatively you may be close enough for the 50mm. If the light is good then the 100-400 may be perfectly fine, otherwise the f/2.8 of the macro or f/1.8 of the 50mm may be the deciding factor.

Have you considered borrowing another body to give more options without having to switch so much? And also the option of renting a faster telephoto? £57 will get you a 70-200 f/2.8L for a week (or £109 will get a 200mm f/2L IS for a week): http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/canon-telephoto-8-c.asp
