counter problem

has anyone encountered theyre ''photo counter re-setiting or giving a diffrent number, my 400d goes from say from pic 101-0036 to 101- 6459 any one experianced something similar?

Have any of your memory cards been used in another camera? This can affect the numbering. Also, once you hit 10,000 they usually start again.

Thank you both for replying, my cards hav enot been used in another camera just mine, I hve been swapping bettween jpeg and raw but don't see how this can cause the counter problem, thank you for the link Matt have downloaded and will digest.
