noise .. and lots of it??

in 2009 i obtained an olympus e450 + twin lens kit
.i have taken hundreds of images with it , but all i get is noise, all over ! luckily i now a little about photoshop , i have to work hard on all shots, but surely you shouldn't have to "de-noise" all the time?

i tried setting it on a tripod and selected loads of different settings but still same results ..none sharp and noisey!

i have not had the cash to purchase a decent flash gun yet . i use the on board and a cheap one bought of an auction site. could this be it? is it an e450 thing? is it me?, or could the camera be faulty?

today was a bright sunny witha couple of clouds type of day in the new forest. i stood outside took shot all over with different settings but to no avail.

these where all done with my camera and loads of post work ... but if you could see the image live and close up ... the noise would be deafening!

Hi Darrel, welcome to the forum.

It would be helpful if you posted an image to illustrate your point. What some people consider excessively noisy may be fine to another person as it is a bit subjective.

I had an E-510 and I never thought that the noise was a problem until I got above ISO 400.

It would also help if you said what sort of noise. Is it chroma or luminance?

The 4/3 system (especially the earlier models) were sometimes criticised for generated more noise than their direct competitors. It's hard to say for definate though without some examples. If you've got anything shot at ISO100 or ISO200 (certainly no higher) that you think is excessively noisy then stick it in the thread (have a look here for instructions).

bare in mind i know nothing about camera settings .. only got this end of july .. i'm an artist not a photographer .. would be nice to see a rough guide chart eg; sunny + clouds = "this rough setting" .. or some thing similar .. i would pay for that !...

i am un-employed with a family .. so any non-costing answers would be great!

software i have .. photoshop cs3 - lightroom 2 - paintshop pro x3 - photomatix pro + many freebies!

Unfortunately there isn't any EXIF data as Paint Shop Pro has stripped it out so I can't confirm your settings.

If that was shot at ISO 100 then something is really weird. It doesn't look like "normal" noise to me (it seems to be vertically banded. Is this processed at all? What file format did you shoot it in? It looks like it's oversharpened (which increases noise) but it's really hard to say. Like I say, it doesn't look normal.

Oh, and to post the image enlarge it (click the plus icon at the top right of the image) and right click on the enlarged image, select properties, copy the link and use that.
Personally I use the BBS tags that I linked to above as I find it easier and faster (being as you can just type them in as you go).

The image below is copyright DPReview and is from an E-420 (which has the same sensor as the E-450) and was shot at ISO 1600



You seem to be getting that sort of level of noise at ISO 200 which suggests to me that something is wrong. Have you contacted Olympus?

I have an Olympus E410 and E620 and neither of my two cameras have ever had an occurrence like that in an image. Have you tried putting the camera into cleaning mode while the camera is switched on, taking off the lens and with a commercial blower cleaning the image pick-up device? Once you've finished, re-attach the lens and switch the camera off and then back on again and go into the menu and select the pixel mapping. Run that and then take a few shots to see if it's corrected it. If it hasn't then I would say there must be something wrong with the sensor in your camera. Contact the place where you bought it from or Olympus direct and arrange to have it looked at.
