From memory it was something to do with the focussing mechanism not working correctly. There does sometimes appear to be a quality control issue with Sigma. TBH the 100-300 is a bit heavy to cart around but I recently got another 50-150 f2.8 which is a great walkaround lens and has the advantage of being good for available light indoor stuff. Really meant to get a 70-200 f2.8 but just thought I'd put a bid on a bargain 100-300 ...expecting to be outbid....took a look in the morning and found I'd won it!

Mine had a fault where the left hand side of the image was fine, but the right was out of focus even at small apertures. They said they'd replaced the 'zoom cams' which as far as I know are the legs which fit in the helical screw, if they wear then the moving bits don't move 'straight' and can wobble. It's the second lens which has had this so I wonder if there's a fault with the design of this component.

What do you think of the image quality? The reviews say it's very good, if fact a hidden gem, are you pleased with it?

Weight is always an issue with devent quality lenses even if they're standard zooms, people like Anglefire say they can hand hold, but I need a monopod, it's nice to be able to rest the weight every once in a while.

The other thing with these long lenses is finding a case which fits them, it's hard enough to find one which fits the pro size camera body, but with a long fat lens on it, then it's very expensive and I'm not buying an expensive bag for one lens!

Not had much chance to do more than make sure it works so far. The last one I had was pretty good - until it went wrong! Luckily I've got a Lowepro toploader that it fits in attached to my D300 - with room in the front pouch for another lens if necessary.

That'll be me!

These are both with the Canon 300mm f2.8L IS, as I don't have any to hand with the 120-300 f2.8 sigma.

The temptation to say 'my haven't you got a big one' is almost overwhelming! LOL

Why are so many lenses threatening an innocent looking bush ?

Well, I fear the curse of Sigma may have hit me today. I was photographing at a dog show using the 50-150 but decided to give the 100-300 a go - after a few shots it refused to AF at all. Switched to manual focus and it would'nt even do that. Took it off, cleaned the contacts put it back on - still no focussing. Cursed it - and late night ebaying - and went back to the 50 -150. Tried it again later and it worked again. Looks like an email to sigma might be a good idea!
