Dear Jason, yep eveything you said I'll take onboard, I've just bought a remote switch, but never before used mirror lock up although I do a lot of macro shots. (If you look at my pictures under F11 you'll see some). Read all about the early morning and late evening as being the prime time and also I try to use F11 when compoising landscapes. I'll have to experiment with the long shutter speeds when I can concentrate on my own as usually husband or grandsons are in tow and get a little bit fed up with me hanging around. Would you say use a ND filter to enable the longer shutter speeds as I've invested in that and a polarising filter. PS. I usually use Canon Camera and lens.
