I think it ultimately comes down to the image and what you are trying to achieve, HDR can be so subtle the people do not realise they are looking at an HDR image but then again it can be really pushed to give the image a more of an arty feel!
I think as we have all descovered this is a very broad and quite a challenging technique, it is a lot of fun though so great choice DD
