Thanks for the feedback. The focus limiter provides a method of speeding up autofocus by restricting it to a smaller area – so yes, it only works with autofocus.

Our reviewer, Matthew Richards send his apologies for the mistake about the VR mechanism. Although some Nikon lenses that feature the VR II system do have automatic tripod detection, the 70-200mm f/2.8 isn't one of them.

Take a look at the group test on pages 104-114 in issue 14 of Nphoto as the lab results are provided for the 70-200mm f/2.8 without the teleconverter. It won the test and you can see just how good it is when left to its own devices.

Whether or not the degree of degradation brought by using a teleconverter is within acceptable limits is a personal decision and factors such as cost and convenience come into play as well as frequency of use.

We are thinking of conducting some in depth investigations of the impact of teleconverters in the future, so stick with us.
