Chris is quite right ViewNX will work on your RAW files but its limitations are very evident in the resizing of the image in the respect that they are set to precise sizes - no re-sizing between them
I downloaded the trial version of CaptureNX but without any useful documentation/tuition information it's as user friendly as a bag of angry ratlesnakes.
I'm in the same position as you, I want to start shooting RAW more and Lightroom 4 seems to be where the wise money is to be spent, but with a computer running on XP and slow RAM it's going to be an expensive exersise to consider - welcome to the world of digital photography, it's great fun but wallet busting
