I think it's a great idea for family and friends and if anyone thinks it's a cheap option then it's obvious they haven't done it themselves , you can always find out their likes and dislikes first or even ask them to pick from your portfolio to make sure it's an image they'd be happy to have rather than just giving them a great big grinning self portrait
