I joined a Flickr 'Point and Shoot' group, and some folks are uploading photos that were done with DLSRs. I uploaded a couple of photos to the group, done with my P&S camera, and the EXIF data is used to show the make and model of camera used. The make and model are shown right there at the side of the photo, so it can be immediately seen if somebody is cheating. Those photos get deleted.
There is a program with which you can add EXIF date to a photo, but you have to pay for it. I don't know that it's worth it for entering a competition.
