You can also turn off the automatic crop and get FX images with a vignette - sometimes severe, othertimes not so bad - and crop to your liking later. This gives more cropping options - a bigger square than DX would allow, maybe, or how about a DX portrait format with the camera in landscape orientation? Some DX zoom lenses cover the full FX frame at certain focal lengths - I read that the 12-24 DX covers FX from 18-24mm, and it would be a pity to waste that.

So the answer to the original question is YES.
