Also, the Canon does HD video and of course the APS sensor is larger, while the price is cheaper. The obvious downside it seems to me ¥ would be when it comes to using lenses other than pancakes, especially zooms. I should also mention that video comes second to my interest over still photography, and I can do without the weather protected body, though it is desirable. Am I missing anything else significant in comparing these cameras? Any advice welcome.
Joetsu, buying a new camera is always quite a complex matter, because as you have already found out there is so much to consider that will eventually influence which model you end up buying. The things to concentrate on are matters like how much money you have to spend, what other essential kit you'll need in addition to the camera to start you off, what your needs are and the spec that will meet those needs and lastly how easy and enjoyable you find the camera and kit to use.
So identify what your needs are first, then set yourself a budget, then go have a look at what is available within your budget that has the right spec to meet your needs and draw up a shortlist. Then go and try each of these cameras out, pick a favourite, have look round for the best deal you can get on it from a trusted and reputable dealer and then go buy it and have some fun.
Whatever you do, don't let any other photographer influence your decision on what you buy, as the camera has to meet all your criteria, not theirs! So stick to your guns and buy what's best for you and you alone. Good luck.
