It looks like you're suffering from a slight case of back focus here Starman .

If you look at the cockerel's ( I'm sorry Rooster's ) legs you'll see that their nicely in focus but the head and more importantly the eyes which are closer to the camera are rather soft , this could be due to the rooster moving or you moving after the camera got it's focus lock or it could be down to the camera / lens combo resulting in back focus . I don't know much about Canon cameras but some better spec cameras have an option in the menu to fine tune the focus to individual lenses , then again it could be as simple as you didn't have the head dead center of the focus point in the view finder and the camera focused on something else .

Your crop works well but the background is still a bit cluttered and distracting but I know what it's like when you can't choose the surroundings you just have to work with what you have .
