The other thing is it is an EF-S lens which means it will not work on a full frame sensor such as the 5D, Canon I believe only produce L lenses for the EF range. The 70-200 F4L does not have weather seals although that still made th L category.

The 17-55 EF-S that the OP is talking about I presume is the F2.8 version this has a constant aperture of F2.8 across the entire zoom range and has superb image quality ,better than the 15-85 with less barrell distortion and chromatic aberrations. I agree the 15-85 is a great lens and is generally the lens I carry with me.
