hi tone2626, also started using what's available lens i have plus the filter. I've started using a 50mm f/1.8 lens plus the raynox filter in front. I've also used 85mm + raynox dcr-250 when I started taking pictures of insects. I've also using an 18-55mm reverse lens for very small subjects or if I want a headshot of my subject.
The key is familiarity with your equipment because i would say that it's a bit hard to use at first. the filter is a good start up specially when budget is concern. hope this helps. ^^
