Canon won the market over when it developed the EOS mount while Nikon bodged an electronic version of the F mount. It was a brave decision by Canon to drop the FD mount and start from scratch and it proved to be a better option in the long run. Nikon have refined their "bodged" F mount and now there is no real difference (as far as I know).

It's always swinging between the 2. One of them does something good, the other improves. Be grateful as it keeps development being pushed forwards. 64 point AF system anyone?!
