There are wide variety of lenses out there. Most are good, a few are very good. The "L" series will spoil you for the rest though.
I like the Canon EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS. It is my favorite all around lens. It isn't perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a good lens.
