Don't think as cloning as a single tool, think it of a process. The used of layers and masks can be the key between a perfect clone and it not working for some. In fact if your using a standard mouse or touch pad its the better way to do it.

Maybe use the magic or quick selection tool to select the pole and copy. Create two new layers and paste the pole in the top layer. Now select your middle layer and set the clone tool to sample current and below. Now you can spray with the clone tool over the pole and it will not show and if a bit does or its not blending to well with the back ground you can use a mask on the middle layer containing the sprayed clone to fade the clone to blend and mask out bits that one the pole.

Instead of selecting the pole you could marques more then just the pole and use a mask on the copy to make sure the clone is perfectly up to the pole.

There are normally more then one way to do things, finding the best way for you isn't always easy.
