I think you need a flash gun. The only on-camera flash control you have is flash exposure comp, metering and curtain.

To get to this you have two ways. Menu way. Menu > Flash Control (in one of the spanner menus(3rd on my 50D) ) > Built-in flash func. setting > Flash exp. comp then use the back dial to adjust.

Other way (not sure if this is true to the 550D as it don't have an LCD top screen but you press the ISO button while looking though the view finder then turn the back dial to adjust. It uses the same exposure correcting scale.

1st Curtain flash means the flash will fire when the shutter opens, 2nd curtain means the flash will fire just before the shutter closes. Its used when trying to illuminate a subject thats moving thats your tracking. so the last piece of light the shutter sees is the "action frozen" subject. There maybe other uses.
