Your software would probably not recognise the camera, but the OS should see something.

It is generally recommended, but I have not seen a full list of reasons why, to use a card reader to transfer. However, if he wants to ever shoot tethered, it will need to see the camera.

Did you look at the manual? I am sure it is in there.

Lightroom is great. Being a non-destructive editor it never changes the original photo. As a result, you do not add a new layer for every small adjustment. I used Elements before, and never do anymore since getting Lightroom. To get the most out of LR, shoot in RAW. I switched to LR mainly for the RAW editing features that Elements did not have (the RAW capabilities in LR are the same as in the full Photoshop).
