1)if you can get away from city lights all the better
2)a good tripod , don't extend the legs or centre column for better stability
3)find your lenses sweet spot at 300mm , a quick google will do . ( usually around f/11 to f/16 )
4)turn off auto ISO and set it to it's lowest standard ( 100 to 200 )
5)use mirror lock or shutter delay to keep vibration to a minimum , a remote release would be useful too
6)spot meter for the moon
7)manual focus using live view , you can zoom in and fine adjust
8)take a shot and check it on your LCD ,then adjust accordingly
9)if you use aperture priority you can adjust the exposure using exposure comp
The cloud cover is up to him up stairs .
