Older Nikon lenses (pre-1977) will not work on DX DSLRs. Any attempt to make them fit will result in damage to the camera. I'm not sure how old you Tamron lens is, or whether it suffers from this problem anyway. It's worth a bit of research before you buy a new camera body.
Within your budget you could pick up a D5100 with the 18-55mm 'Kit' lens. Unfortunately there's a huge gap between that and the next model (D7000) which your budget won't manage, even without a lens.
My suggestion would be to get the D5100. It's a fine camera and the kit lens will give you a useful range for normal everyday use, and for the price cannot be beaten.
