Sigma makes good lenses but it sounds like you got a defective one, and may have taken a hard knock during transportation. Many lenses are now made in China or Korea, so buying foreign isn't really bad. I have a couple of Sigma lenses and they are great. My Sigma 18 - 250 mm telephoto is made in Japan and is awesome!
As for trading it in, look for your online camera dealers; they usually do trade-ins. Over here in the States, I go online and tell them what I want to trade. They e-mail me with a free shipping label to send it to them. They evaluate it and get back to you with a price. However, if your lens is as bad as you say, they may reject it.
I just converted your pounds to dollars and it works out at $560. That's a right good price to pay for a lens, and it ought to produce good results. You could also contact the Sigma corporation. They have lens repair shops that could fix that lens for you if you wanted to keep it.
