Can't speak for anyone else, but I use whatever I've got that'll achieve what I'm after - sometimes as that's all I've about my person but often as it's best or the only option. As a result, I use:

Mobile phone for the last 6 years (usually as that may be all I've got but quite often as it'll get into spots I can't photo any other way) - SE K750, SE C905, HTC Desire
Compact (currently a Canon G11 as my 'carry everywhere' but bought for dog-walking or OH's dog-walking Fuji HS10)
Canon 7D - the workhorse for photoshoots/calls, studio and pet shoots + wildlife, landscapes and macros
Sigma SD10 - converted to fulltime IR
Sigma SD14 - macros and some landscapes
Canon 30D - MPE 65mm + Sigma EM-140DG macro flash

I enjoy trying to get the most out of whatever's in my hand at the time, so try to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each bit of kit and attempt to fully exploit the full potential
