And as far as courses are concerned, I think you have just to pick one and do it. If you keep comparing everything that is on offer, you will only confuse yourself.
I did a ten week 'beginners and improvers' course at a local college last autumn; as long as it is given by a 'proper' school or college, you can't go far wrong. Just jump in and go for it!
There's always something you'll learn, plus you'll meet lots of other enthusiasts, get to use the school studio and there are normally plenty of willing models (your fellow students).
The lecturer will be prepared to help you with specific problems/questions.
