If the centre column can be removed and inverted, don't know how. I've just tried on mine and can't figure out how. However, the legs splay out to about 180 degrees which will get your camera pretty close to the ground anyway.
IF you can afford it, spend the extra £100 or so on the CF version, you'll never regret it. Also, on the head make sure you get the RC2 version.
As you've pretty much decided to go for the Ball/socket head you'll need to get into the habit of holding onto your camera whenever you release the head otherwise it'll come crashing down onto the tripod leg!!!!
