I think the fact that the words duotone and monochrome are used for the same thing, is confusing.
There are several ways to get monochrome; I think experimenting will be fun and educating. Everyone will simply have to find the most striking example.
By the way, my laptop came with Picasa preloaded (it's free anyway as far as I know) and that programme has a 'tint' setting in the 'effects,' which I have used successfully in the past to get monochrome pictures.
