Hi jtrd13 (or whatever your real name is) and welcome to the forum.

I don't know what printer you're using. I get the same problem with mine (all HP) unless I go into the advanced settings and select 'Greyscale'. This tells the printer to use the black cartridge only and I get great B&W prints.
