the 50mm f1.8 is a good lens and for portraits you should get some decent images
i think it's an ideal lens to practice with it will make you move around to frame your subject rather than relying on zoom to do it for you
at f1.8 the depth of field is shallow enough to get some really creative results it also allows you to make the most of natural light

in some ways it's a really versatile lens and can teach you a lot because of the simplicity of it
no zoom , no IS just you and the camera

have fun with it and i think you will be surprised at the results

another lens to add to your arsenal if your budget allows i would recommend the canon 24 - 105 f4 L IS a nice walkabout lens with good optics although i have to say this is going to add even more weight

unfortunately it seems the better the kit gets the more it weighs
