I've done a bit of rugby photography and agree with what's been said already. You'll need a fairly fast shutter speed but don't be tempted to do what I did first time round - go for too fast a shutter speed. 1/500 is a good place to start but see how you get on and play around to see what works best.
What kit are you using? I've use a 70-200 mm lens and sometimes attach my X2 converter but I prefer not to use it if I can avoid it.
