Have you calibrated your monitor?
This is something I discovered quite recently. I bought the Pantone Spyder which allows you to adjust the gamma on your monitor to suit the printer output. OK, it's quite a lot of cash to lay out for a piece of kit you'll use once and stack on the shelf (alongside the 1997 games!) and only break out once a year, or when you buy a new monitor - But it takes all the guesswork out and I can thoroughly recommend it.
