Stormsong is right about the manipulation; I wondered about that too. I assumed (over) manipulated photos would automatically be disqualified.
And about the voting ... that's just for fun. I love getting comments more than votes, but they are more often than not accompanied by votes. I was lucky enough to do well on the voting front, but I am well aware that actively looking at entries and commenting/voting, advertises your presence on the site and generates (polite or curious) return visits. I suppose if the voting system was abandoned, and the comment facility stayed, there would be rivalry about the number of comments!
What I cannot stand, are what I call 'empty' votes, that automatically seem to 'stick' to
the images of certain entrants, whether or not the picture has any merit. (I have ranted about this before, so leave it at this!)
