Looks like you've answered your own question; its all down to finances.
I upgraded from a 400D to the 550D and have no regrets, but that was before the 600D or 60D were available. Beyond doubt the 60D is the more advanced choice, but you have to ask yourself will you use the benefits that the 60D offers over and above the 550D. I think the answer is yes, the key advantages to me are the superior viewfinder, faster frame rate and articulated screen.
There are many other differences between the two, but those three would be my motivation to consider spending more. Spending more equates to about £300.00, and that's a lot of money. But, to take advantage of both camera bodies, you're going to need better glass and that means spending more on lenses too. However, and this is a loose figure, saving £300.00 would only get you half way towards a top quality zoom lens, and the chances are you're going to want more than one quality lens to match the potential output of your new 18mp body, which ever model you choose. With saying that, the 50mm prime will give excellent results and will show you how good other top quality lenses can be.
As I said, it's all down to money.....
Good luck with your final choice, if you can stretch to it go for the 60D and save again for some decent lenses that will make your body upgrade that much more rewarding.
Rick.
