I think the old(er) generation was much more used to doing things themselves; the 'make do and mend' attitude was very much the 'normal' attitude till ... the seventies ... eighties?
Since I started as a volunteer ranger (in a country park) a couple of years ago, I've become much more adept at digging holes, mending and setting up fences and repairing benches. I must admit though that for really 'heavy' jobs, I rely on the men of the team.
In spite of decades of 'emancipation,' women still haven't got the strength of men. (Thank goodness!)
