I have very recently been fortunate to have upgraded my gear and am now shooting with a Nikon D300 , I have also sold the family silve (not told the wife yet)r and have invested in a Sigma 300mm 2.8 prime although I have not had much chance to use it yet.

Well, the D300 is the successor to the D200 which I've got, so should be very good for cricket shots. I've taken cricket shots with my 70-200mm F2.8 and if I want extra reach stick a 1.4 or 2x converter on it. A zoom is better for cricket shots, for when the ball is hit towards a fielder near where you are positioned, as a 300mm prime might not get the shot in context.
