@ rbarry - glad that you have come through that scare.
As you say, wearing glasses is a pain. I too use varifocals but made a mistake in choosing a rather shallow frame. Every time I want to read close up, I have to take my glasses off as I am reading part through the frame and part underneath.
And, as you say, it costs a fortune.
