Speaking as an amateur, over the last few years age has started to take a toll on my eyesight too. I'm between +2 1/2 to 3 in the lens department, but still have a couple of clicks left in the diopter setting before I have to resort to using an optical aid.
I find it easier to have a quick squint at the LCD panel and if necessary will magnify the image to the maximum to make sure all is ok. I hate wearing glasses; it's not an age stigma thing, I just find them uncomfortable, restricting and if I can't find them because I've lost them again (normally find them pushed back over my forhead) then the damn things keep falling off when bending down or leaning over things.
My last fitting cost me a fortune because I opted to have varifocal lenses. They work from 2 meters (could have had a 4 meter option) through to close up work. They are referred to as office glasses and give a seamless transition throughout that range. Still don't like them but have to admit they really help with this sort of thing; that is concentrating on the keyboard to the pc screen to reading latest magazine to finding the reference book on the top of the book shelf etc.
Could be worse, I was told by my opticain two years ago I had Macular Degeneration which affects your central vision. At worst it leaves you with peripheral vision only, and a black area in the central field of view, which accounts for 95% of your cognitive vision. I was given the all clear two months ago- big relief!
