No, the SB-600 can't be a commander, and the D5000 can't be a commander either. So even if the OP bought an SB-900, which
can be a commander, he'd have nothing to command. He could then buy an SB-600, of course. Or he could just get the SB-600 now, and buy either an SB-900 or a D90 when he's ready to go wireless. It's what he already has that is the limiting factor, not what he might get.
