A colleague at work has an iPad (mainly for reading on his daily commute). He also has some photos on their and subscribes to the Guardians photo feed. The images look fantastic and he's not made any changes to any settings - from what I've seen, I would recommned one for portfolios (saving for one for myself!).
Dont think it would be worth calibrating the screen anyway (or on a laptop) as you need to view the screen under strict guidelines for the calibration to be effective (18% grey walls, lights off etc). You could calibrate a laptop/iPad but when you sit with a client in their brightly lit lounge, it's all been a waste of time. Just convert sample images to sRGB so they look nice and bright/saturated.
