I recently got to try out a Canon 7D and I absolutely loved it! My pennies are definitely being saved up for that bad boy!
However, I've also tried a 50D and found it so incredibly intuitive to use that it made a really easy transition from my normal 400D.
The big selling point of the 7D is obviously the ability to shoot movies, but it also has 8fps burst, great auto-focusing and spot-on metering. However, these features aren't really worth the extra cash if you don't plan on photographing high-speed sports or making short films with your camera.
So, from a personal point of view, I'd recommend the 50D unless you plan on branching into other, more specialist areas of photography. Oh, and I'd highly recommend any of the Sigma wide-angle lenses too!
