I think the answer to the part of your post that I have highlighted can be answered by
'the reason you decided to buy it in the first place'. Apologies if this reply appears somewhat negative but at the moment you question is much too broad for an opening post whilst at the same time lacking in sufficient information. It might for instance help if you provided information as to what aspect of photography you are interested in, what model of flashgun have you purchased, have you read the accompanying handbook and are there any areas which are not fully understood. Post back with at least this information, especially your reasons for buying it in the first place which of course is linked to what aspect of photography is of interest to you.
