Basically it's as Chris states. ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) is a plug-in to both Photoshop and Elements and NOT an application in it's own right. It was designed this way so that as newer cameras are released instead of the entire application having to be rewritten only the plug-in needs to be updated by adding support for these newer cameras. This usually happens on approximately a 3 monthy cycle.

So in direct answer to your question- yes it is possible as ACR is installed by default. Now if it's the case that you are unable to open your RAW files in ACR it may well be the case that your camera model, especially if it is a newer one, may not be recognised with the existing ACR plug-in that is compatible with Elements 5. If this is indeed the case, and you are happy with using Elements then two choices are open to you. Firstly, you might want to consider upgrading to the latest version (version 8) or, secondly, converting your RAW files to the DNG format using the FREE DNG converter available from Adobe.

You might also wish to consider giving us on the forum a bit more information e.g. have you tried opening your RAW images in ACR at all, what camera you are using and what Platform (Windows or Mac). Members will then have more information at their disposable and will be able to direct you to links for resolving any problems you may be experiencing in terms of updates etc.

Rather than go into a long explantion of what the DNG format is, assuming of course you are not already aware, then information can be found here: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

Hope this helps a bit and of course, although I should have said it first, welcome to the forum.
