The EFS 17-55 f2.8 is a cracker of a lens.Same range as your kit lens but a constant f2.8 through the range and the image quality is superb.
It is pricey but you are paying for the quality of glass...

Agree with Wavemachine,a 60d would be perfect, I have this myself and find it great.
Also agree that the full frame copes better with low light than crop sensor but you could always buy a fast lens...
