I have had the 17-55 for ~ 3 years now and absolutely love it. Cannot say I have had dust problems. It is subject to glare if shooting into the sun.

I don't think this would really tell you much. Someone could use a high quality 300 mm prime and then put a 2x TC onto a crappy zoom lens set at 150 mm, and so the 300 mm prime will win hands down...
