Actually - I didn't 'diss' the magazine - I dissed the fact that the new magazine, sporting a new website name (www.nphotomag.com) links back to an old and not very good...

Deepends on the length of the pole, but if it's less than 100m then a wireless trigger should do it - get them for about £50.
For the focusing - you could rely on autofocus - or set a hyperfocal...

Power In The Dark

Fiddlers Ferry Power Station, Warrington, Cheshire.
Spot metered on the river and added a ND then dropped the exposure several stops to bring the sandbanks & station into deep shadow.
