What is a good alternative to Photoshop?

I am looking at Lightroom 3 right now. It seems to have most of what I want, raw editing, conversion to black and white with some editing, organizing etc....

Do you mean crop out separate parts of the main image, or totally different shots of the same people that are in the main image. Both are interesting ideas.
