Used to do a lot of early morning sunrise type...
Used to do a lot of early morning sunrise type shots (4ish) in Cardiff and considered my tripod to have a secondary purpose of supporting the camera! But I never had any problems from those stumbling...

Speaking for myself, I used to use High Pass filter to sharpen as the final editing process after sizing for end usage (print or web)
Now use Nik Software to sharpen at end of edit but...
